just before the launch of the Amaze, back in 2013, Honda was not doing that well in India. In fact, it was right at the bottom of the pit. With the Amaze, it launched its first diesel engine in India. The result? 78,000 units of the Amaze were sold in the first year itself, which accounted for 40 per cent of the overall national sales for Honda.

Now, three years later, the Amaze has gone under the knife to stay fresh. What has changed is the front bumper, the grille has been treated to some more chrome and the tail-lamps have been reworked. With that added chrome it looks a lot more like the Mobilio. Do we like it? We’ll keep that bit for tomorrow when we take it out for a drive.

The biggest news is that the Amaze will now come with a continuously variable transmission instead of a five-speed torque converter automatic. Yes, it’s the unit that does duty in the Jazz. This, claims Honda, boosts fuel efficiency. It now stands at 18.1kpl — slightly more than the petrol manual. Honda also says that it has worked on bringing N.V.H levels down, especially in the diesel — something that was desperately needed.

There are a lot of changes in the cabin, too. The dashboard is all-new, and has more in common with the Jazz’s, now, and also new is the instrument cluster. The top-end variant gets auto climate control.

The mechanical  remain the same, and what also remains the same is the starting price of the car — Rs 5.29 lakh. For the VX CVT, it goes up to Rs 8.19 lakh. The diesel Amaze range starts at Rs 6.41 lakh and goes up to Rs 8.19 lakh.

The company also announced its Safety Direction for India that every new Honda model, introduced in the market from new fiscal year 2016 – 17 will apply Dual S.R.S as standard equipment across all variants. Also, Dual S.R.S Airbags will become standard offering across Honda line-up, including current models, by April 2017. Additionally, the customers of the new Amaze can opt for Dual S.R.S airbags from the base variant, and the bookings for these variants will begin from May this year.
