Yes, we know what you’re thinking. The NuvoSport (Nuvo for new, and Sport for… well, sport) looks a lot like the Quanto, and that’s because it is a replacement for what was M&M’s first sub-four metre people-mover. Only this is one of the most thorough refreshes you will see.
Big news is the change in platform: the NuvoSport is no longer based on a condensed Xylo platform. Instead, it uses the new Scorpio’s underpinnings. Speaking to TG.com, Rajeev Mehta, head of M&M’s product planning division, said “The NuvoSport project was consumer feedback-driven. It was never treated as a Quanto update. People who bought the Quanto told us the driving dynamics needed to improve, which is why for the NuvoSport, we chose the third-generation platform. This platform helped us make the NuvoSport significantly lighter, more rigid, more stable with better ride and handling. It’ll also help the NuvoSport pass stringent crash tests with flying colours.”
That leads us on to another question: considering the NuvoSport has had a platform change, why didn’t Mahindra take the opportunity to completely change the car’s appearance? Mehta says customers thought the Quanto, despite being a compact SUV, looked too much like an MPV, and so, the focus was on giving the NuvoSport a face as intimidating as a sub-four metre SUV can have. It looks a lot more imposing, now, with that new face, though the rest of it is good ol’ Quanto. The interior is pretty much the same, and you still get seating for seven: five seats coupled with two jump seats at the back.
Powering the range-topper in the Mahindra under-four metre SUV line-up is a three-cylinder, 1.5-litre mHawk diesel with twin-stage turbocharging that makes 100bhp and 240Nm of torque. A five-speed manual is standard, and a five-speed AMT can be had on the N6 and N8 trims.
Dual airbags and ABS are standard on all variants except the base N4, which is priced at Rs 7.35 lakh. The N4+ costs Rs 7.65 lakh, the N6 costs Rs 8.36 lakh, the N6 AMT is priced at Rs 9 lakh, the N8 is Rs 9.12 lakh and topping it off is the Rs 9.76 lakh N8 AMT.
